How much is that doggy in the window? Isn’t that how the song goes? Apparently it’s 45.4 billion dollars…well, not really. That’s the estimated total U.S. Pet Industry expenditure for 2009 according to the American Pet Products Association.
Here are a few other numbers from the APPA:

That’s a whole lot of pets and a whole lot of money being spent in the pet industry.
I have three dogs and I’ve spent a decent dime on those three guys. My main expenses are on food, treats, toys, training, medical, and vet expenses.
How much have you spent on your pets this year?

Wow! 45.4 billion is a pretty large number. I guess if you think about it there are a lot of expenses involved with a pet. I own three dogs and off the top of my head some of the expenses are:
Training (training is ongoing with me and my dogs)
Food
Treats
Toys
Veterinarian
Heartworm Medication
Flea and Tick Medication
I’m sure there’s other stuff I spend money on. I can see how the expense pile up especially if you have to make monthly visits to the vet.
If you’re getting any kind of pet keep in mind that the expenses can sometimes be very high.
