How Would You Like A 100 Pound Pet Rodent?

People love their pets even if it is a Giant Guinea Pig! That’s right the big guy standing next to the bear in the picture above is the largest rodent on the planet known as a Capybara. One of the Capybara’s closest relatives is the Guinea Pig. These giant rodents are popular pets in South Brazil and Uruguay and after watching the animal planet video of Caplin the Capybara I can see why.
Capybara The Giant Guinea Pig

Check out the video of Caplin the Capybara on Animal Planet. I like the shot of the Capybara sitting next his cousin the Guinea Pig. He’s definitely an unusal pet. However, it got me thinking about how Capybara’s are similar to dogs and cats. Like a cat and a litter box, or a dog and a wee-wee pad, a Capybara will only go to the potty in the water, so you always need to have a bowl of water with you to allow him to “Get Busy”.
Caplin the Capybara has even learned some basic commands as seen in the Animal Planet video. At the very end you see how he has learned to shake hands just like a dog.
Giant Guinea Pig As A Pet
Would I get a giant guinea pig as a pet. Well the jury is still out on that one. If I’m going with an exotic pet I think I’d prefer a Miniature Pet Pig like the Royal Dandie or Dandie Extreme. However, if you want an unusual pet, a Capybara might be the pet for you.
One thing that did concern me was first of all in the Animal Planet video she mentions that she’s a little afraid to get in the water with Caplin now that he’s full grown and second watching this video shows that they can also have an aggressive side.
However, lets not forget that a dog can be aggressive and scary too.
Overall I’d say do your research before you buy an exotic pet. There’s definitely not as much information available compared to a dog so I’d suggest you try to get in touch with someone who already owns a Capybara and find out as much detail as possible on every aspect of the animal.
By the way, I did come across this book featuring a Capybara in Celeste and the Giant Hamster.
